A crown may be indicated for the following reasons:
A crown may be indicated in the presence of a large cavity or a root canal.
  • If the tooth has a large cavity;
  • The tooth has had a root canal;
  • The tooth has a large, weak filling;
  • To replace a failing or unacceptable existing crown; or
  • For cosmetic improvement.

Crowns can be made from different materials, depending upon what the situation requires:

  • Gold crowns;
  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns; or
  • All porcelain crowns.

The trend is toward reducing or eliminating metal in modern dentistry. All-porcelain crowns are considered state of the art. They maintain translucency and are difficult to distinguish from natural teeth. Since there is no metal substructure, the problem of the "dark line" along the edge of the gum is liminated.
