How
does bleeding stop after an extraction?
After an extraction it is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding.
This begins the healing process. Thats why we ask you to bite on a gauze
pad from thirty to forty-five minutes after an extraction.
What can I do if bleeding continues?
If bleeding or oozing continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another
gauze pad and bite firmly for another thirty minutes. You may have to do this
several times.
Why
is the first 24 hours important?
After the blood clot forms, it is important to protect it, especially for the
next twenty-four hours. So dont smoke
don't
suck through a straw
dont rinse your mouth vigorously
and dont clean the teeth next to the extraction site. DO
limit yourself to calm activities for the first twenty-four hours. This keeps
your blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding and helps the healing process.
What are the natural events after extraction? What should I expect?
After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and have some swelling. You
can use an ice bag (twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off) to keep this to a minimum.
The swelling usually starts to go down after forty-eight hours.
What can I do to overcome the symptoms after extraction?
To control discomfort, take pain medication as recommended by Dr. Karimi. Remember,
don't take pain medication on an empty stomach or nausea may result. Drink lots
of fluids and eat only soft nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. Dont
use alcoholic beverages and avoid hot and spicy foods. Gently
rinse your mouth with warm salt water three times a day starting the day after
the extraction.
